August 16, 2006 -- Additional season information

Hello fellow bowlers, subs, and former league members!

The current league officers attended Plaza Lanes officers kickoff meeting last night. We've got some important information to share with you:

(1) We are changing the date of our own league's pre-season meeting to one week earlier, to Wednesday August 30. We think this will help us all to find enough additional people to add teams 9 and 10. (FYI, June Cannon, our current president, will be leading this meeting, as I am not available that night.) The meeting agenda I previously sent is still attached below.

(2) USBC certification fees for 2006-07 have been raised. The new fee is $19 for both men and women. The extra dollars go towards youth bowling programs and the state-level bowling association. (Note: Our weekly bowling fee is unaffected and remains $10.)

(3) A new automatic scoring system from AMF/Qubica has been installed at Plaza over the summer -- and those increasingly on-the-fritz tv screens have all been replaced with new flat-panel displays! Before the season starts, come on in for a practice game or two so that you can learn how to use the new scoring system.

(4) As per our poll at the end of last season, we have added 2 weeks of bowling to our schedule. Each half is now 13 weeks. We will still have the 2 additional nights past these 26 weeks: Week 27 will be the champ rolloff and doubles tournament, and Week 28 will be the "fun night" 1-round elimination tournament (participation optional, does not count for stats or standings).

Also, here is a tip from the current issue of USBowler magazine that is now arriving in your mailboxes:
Check your gear before the season starts to see what might need replacing or repair. Things such as your towel (does it smell from being in your bag all summer?), rosin bag, finger grips (they do expire and wear out), slide pads on shoes, ball surface (need any repairs?) Get things ready before the season starts, and get in a few practice games to start loosening back up after the summer.

August 11, 2006

Hello fellow bowlers, subs, and former league members!

It is time to get ready for the 2006-2007 season. If you are not personally interested, please pass on this invitation. Friends, neighbors, and other people working in the vicinity are welcome to join. We are looking to have TEN full teams this year. Recruit, recruit, recruit!

---> Are you planning to return to the league this fall? If so, let your captain know. Or reply to me if you do not have a captain from a previous year.
---> Will you be a team captain and put together a team? If so, please reply to me with the names of your team members.

Important Dates

  • Pre-season meeting: Wed Sept 6 August 30 **See below for meeting information. All bowlers are strongly encouraged to attend!
  • First night of bowling: Wed Sept 13
  • "Bowl for Holiday Cash" night: Wed Nov 15
  • No bowling on: Nov 22, Dec 27
  • Last week of bowling: March 21, April 4, 2007

Fees

  • Annual sanction fees: Hopefully not affected by change to USBC. (Last year was $16 men and $15 women). Will know this amount by the pre-season meeting. $19 each for both men and women.
  • Weekly bowling fees: $10

PRE-SEASON MEETING INFORMATION

WHEN: Wed August 30 @ 5pm
WHERE: Unisys, room 103/105 near the Bldg 1 employee entrance. Non-employees, please sign the visitor log at the guard's desk.

AGENDA

  • Vote for league officers. (No proxies; must be present to vote.)
  • Hand out rule books and sanction card applications. The all-new USBC playing rules are at: http://www.bowl.com/rules/playingrules.aspx
  • Discuss any USBC playing rule changes and changes to our league bylaws; vote.
  • Collect certification fees (optional). Due by 2nd week of bowling (per our league rules).
**Online certification is working. If you choose to certify this way, PLEASE PROVIDE A COPY OF THE RECEIPT TO ME (LEAGUE SECRETARY). The online method does not associate you with a league and therefore leaves you off of the league roster. Therefore I need your receipt to send to the Metro Detroit USBC office to prove you are in our league.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO PRIOR TO THE PRE-SEASON MEETING

All bowlers:

  • Review our league bylaws to ensure you agree, or to recommend a change. Review the USBC playing rules (the file is 3MB in size and too big to attach - go to http://www.bowl.com/rules/playingrules.aspx instead). Did anything happen last season that you feel should be covered by a league rule? Come to the meeting with any questions or concerns. Your input is important!

Team captains:

  • Confirm your team roster. Per Rule 104b, teams automatically disband at the end of a season, and it is up to YOU to set up your team roster for the coming season.
  • Review rule 104a on captain's responsibilities and review rules 103a-b on the Board of Directors' responsibilities (because team captains are automatically members of the league's Board of Directors).
